“Karajan Digital Library” Vol. 15
“When I studied in Vienna all the students grew up with Mahler. It was our daily bread.”
Herbert von Karajan
It is well known that Karajan – unlike many other great conductors – did not interpret the complete Mahler works for orchestra. He concentrated on the symphonies No 4, 5, 6 and 9. Especially the enigmatic Ninth was one of the most highly acclaimed achievements in his last ten years. Vol 15 of Deutsche Grammophon’s “Karajan Digital Library” is an all Mahler set and contains every Mahler studio recording Karajan produced plus an extremely rare example of a live recording the maestro approved (symphony No 9). Apart from the symphonies there is “Das Lied von der Erde” and two cycles of songs with one of the best Mahler singers ever, Christa Ludwig.
