Eliette and Herbert von Karajan Institute

The Eliette and Herbert von Karajan Institute is a cultural establishment that was founded by Eliette von Karajan and is dedicated to fostering and furthering Herbert von Karajan’s musical legacy.

The institute was founded in 2005 in Salzburg and is successor to the Herbert von Karajan Centre that was opened in 1995 in Vienna and which established itself as a performance venue and a place for encouraging young artists. On Eliette von Karajan’s wishes the Herbert von Karajan Centre and subsequently the affiliated Karajan Archives were moved to Salzburg, the birthplace and home of the maestro, as of 1 November 2006.

Tasks of the Institute

After coordinating the worldwide activities for the Karajan Centenary in 2008, in which a series of international projects took place to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Herbert von Karajan’s birth on 5 April 2008, the Institute is now concerned with three main tasks:

  1. Administering Herbert von Karajan’s musical legacy and thus all the rights related to branding and licensing. The Institute is the relevant contact centre as regards all legal questions concerning Herbert von Karajan.

  2.  Developing and organising innovative projects in the sphere of promoting young people with the aim of generating in them a long-term interest and enthusiasm for classical music.

  3. Fostering and continuously expanding the Karajan Archives, which with their comprehensive collections are regarded worldwide as the central point of contact in questions of research on Herbert von Karajan’s life and work.
