EXHIBITION 90 YEARS OF THE SALZBURG FESTIVAL

"K" as in Karajan

In 2010 the Salzburg Festival celebrates the 90th anniversary of its existence. To mark the occasion the festival has committed itself this year in a very special way to the idea of its founding fathers in making the whole of Salzburg a stage. An exhibition in several parts offers visitors the chance to explore nine decades of festival history at various locations in the city. Hardly anyone had such a distinct and lasting impact on this history as Herbert von Karajan, and so an individual thematic focus in the exhibition in the Salzburg Museum is dedicated to this outstanding conductor. In a festival encyclopaedia which people can walk through, the section “K” as in Karajan presents an insight into the life and work of the conductor, former artistic director and long-standing member of the festival’s board of directors. Another section, entitled “Being Herbert von Karajan”, is concerned with Karajan’s marketing strategies.
